Mission and History


Mission

The League of Women Voters of Fort Wayne, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate.


History


While the League of Women Voters will be 100 years old in 2020, the Fort Wayne League has been active for about 10 years.  For a history of LWV, click here. 

Initially the Fort Wayne League focused our efforts on voter service and citizen education.

  • We produced a monthly WELT radio program on various issues relevant to the Fort Wayne Community. These programs are available on our website under the other information menu tab.
  • We cohosted films and events for pay equity day, women’s history month and candidate forums.
  • We cosponsored a civic education course for adults on the U.S. Constitution, which was based on the “We the People” Program. 
  • We participated in and hosted many informational events.  Also, we conducted numerous voter registration drives. 


 In 2013, LWV of Indiana and Common Cause of Indiana along with several other groups formed a statewide coalition calling for redistricting reform.  The name of the Coalition is All IN for Democracy. Advocacy efforts resulted in Indiana having an Interim Study Committee on Independent Redistricting during 2015-2016. This bipartisan committee, comprised of legislators and citizens, made a recommendation to create an independent redistricting commission. Several of our members attended the committee hearings, and we have continued to actively engage in advocacy for redistricting reform.  .
